Updated: Jul 25

Imagine it is the first day of school and you don't know anyone. You moved over the summer and you have no friends yet, so you sit in your seat trying not to stand out like a sore thumb. The day begins and you're slowly getting comfortable, but then your teacher says the dreaded words-

When I call your name, tell me about yourself.

Your face turns red, the room gets hot, and your words suddenly twist in your mouth. This is the worst part of being new! So the class or your partner waits for you to answer and you sit under their watchful eyes wilting. We don't want our students to tell like that, so getting to know you task cards can actually make this easier!

Benefits of Getting to Know You Task Cards

If you don't know, task cards are when you take a larger task and break into smaller parts. There are so many benefits to using getting to know you task cards:

Large Task > Small Parts

A good example would be cooking dinner for your family. One family cooks the turkey while another cooks the sides. One more makes the dessert and the last makes the lemonade. All of them are making dinner, but the tasks they complete to create the entire dinner are different. By using bite-size tasks and questions, students can get to know each other with more ease.

Less Pressure

Task cards are usually completed in small groups or pairs. This is the perfect way to support learners that struggle with participating in small group. By putting a student with a partner or small group, you allow them a chance to practice the skills being reviewed without as much anxiety.

Can Be Done in Pairs

As I said above, task cards are perfect for pairs. You can assign the task cards, and then follow up with student when every pair is done. This is ideal, because you can maintain focus in the classroom, as well as get anecdotal data on how students are doing with the material they are learning.

Work At Your Own Pace

Task cards are a great way for students to break a large task into smaller parts. This is ideal when it comes to meeting the needs of all students. Students that work faster, can move onto extension. Students that require more time, can work at their own pace without feeling like they have to rush.

Easy Ways to Connect With Others

It's difficult to get to know people, especially when you don't know anyone in your class. Random questions like "what did you do during summer?" can cause anxiety, especially if the student can't afford or isn't able to do anything extracurricular. Task cards allow students to safely connect with others without having to reveal too much.

More Privacy

Think of everything below, plus being able to feel more comfortable getting to know your class.

There are so many reasons by getting to know you task cards are beneficial, especially when the cards are on topics students are interested in. Today, let's focus on xBox.

Getting to Know You Task Cards:

Build Your Gaming System

xBox

One of the easiest ways to connect with a student is to know what they like to do in their free time.

You can ask them in a conference or when they first get to school; you ask them at recess or during lunch, but not all students are comfortable just flat-out saying what they like. These xBox task cards can make getting to know students easier.

Students complete task cards where they build their own xBox gaming set-up. This product is always a hit with my xBox loving students. It even prompts conversations about what gaming system is the best!

Playstation 5

I remember when the Playstation 5 was released. It was much anticipated and cost WAY too much money. I didn't quite understand the infatuation, but then I saw my boyfriend find a PS5 that was affordable (if hundreds of dollars could be affordabl). He was so excited and so happy that I HAD to get it for him!

Imagine how students feel! It may seem simple to us, but getting a PS5 could be a turning point for them. They could now play games they couldn't play before, as well as fit in with other students that already had PS5's.

Nintendo Switch

I knew nothing about the Nintendo Switch until a game I wanted to play was ONLY played using the Switch. When I did get one (or when I got one for Christmas) I was impressed by how easy it was to play with the system, as well as how nice it was to be able to carry it everywhere.

Students feel the same way. You can play with the system as a whole, or you can take off the controller parts of the system to play hand-held games. So many students love this system!
