Blends have always made sense to me, but digraphs? Not so much. Of course, the concept comes back to me after review, but I don't have it in immediate recall. Maybe this is the same for you, too? This freebie can help and your students (as well as my past self).
Syllable Division w/ Blends & Digraphs

Look at the steps below for an idea on how to teach this idea!
Step 1. Read the definition to your students.
Step 2. Present a list of words to your students. Have them underline the vowels in the words.
anklet. contract. district. pumpkin. tantrum. monster.
Step 3. Ask how many syllables are in each word (two). Point out that there are consonants between the vowels. Re-write the words with the consonants between vowels underlined.
anklet. contract. district. pumpkin. tantrum. monster.
Tell them that when there are three consonants between two vowels in one word, they have to identify which TWO consonants to keep together. To do this, we need to see if the consonants are digraphs or need to be blended.
Consonant Digraphs
A consonant digraph is when there are TWO consonants that represent ONE sound. Common digraphs include:
sh. th. ch. wh. ck. ph.
Consonant digraphs are seen in the words below.
sh | e | ll
b | a | th
ch | i | p
Consonant digraphs can be in the beginning, middle, or ending of a word.
Have students practice identifying consonant digraphs using the words below:
whale | pick |
with | phone |
anther | athlete |
Consonant Blends
A consonant blend is a sequence of consonants where EACH letter is heard and blended together quickly.
Common blends include:
bl. cl. br. cr. sc. sk. tw. schr. -ct. -lb. -nd.
Consonants are seen in the words below:
broom. clock. draw. flag. lamp.
You usually find blends in the beginning or the end of a word.
Have students practice identifying consonant blends using the words below:
frog | milk |
glue | pick |
scalp | branch |
